Question:"We have received your report on the analysis of soil samples from our fairways and, since pH levels averaging 4.3 show acidity, we were rather surprised that you did not recommend lime treatment. As some more heavily-used areas are showing poor growth, would not liming improve matters?"
Answer/Response:"Liming is a very hazardous operation on the fairways of a moorland golf course and is only to be recommended in extreme circumstances. If carried out, liming can result in a very damaging attack of Take-all patch disease (Ophiobolus) which leaves fairways very uneven and unsightly and is difficult to control. There is also a danger of altering the moorland character of fairways, encouraging lush pasture-type growth and favouring coarser ryegrass at the expense of the hard-wearing natural bents and fescues. In your case we feel that fairway improvement can be more safely achieved by mechanical work. Spiking using tractor-drawn deep spiking equipment would be useful, particularly in the spring and autumn, although it could be carried out in the winter as well if ground conditions permit. Scarification would also be beneficial in the spring using grassland chain harrows or a tractor-drawn rotary scarifier. Scarifying tears out matted growth and should encourage a more vigorous and more even growth. Such work results in fairway improvement without the undesirable side-effects possible after lime treatment."
