Question:"We have had a cover of snow on our greens for a fairly long time, and when it cleared we discovered the turf to be attacked quite severely by Fusarium patch disease. We are having difficulty in obtaining our favourite mercury-based fungicide and wonder what else there is that we can use?"
Answer/Response:"This disease quite often occurs in turf which has been covered by snow - hence the term "snow mould" - or rather, "pink snow mould". Though there are obvious problems in forecasting, a preventative application of fungicide before the snow arrives can be worthwhile. The mercurial fungicides are no longer being manufactured, due to E.E.C. rulings. There are however other contact fungicides based on quintozene (PCNB), chlorothalonil, iprodione and Bordeaux/malachite green which you may use instead (throughout the year). Available also are the systematic fungicides based on benomyl, carbendazim, thiabendazole, thiophanate-methyl, etc. though the use of these should really be restricted to the growing season, when their efficiency is greater. You should be able to obtain an appropriate fungicide from your normal supplier."
