| Question: | "We are taking up some shredded bark (sample enclosed) which we used at one time to top up one of the non-grass gallops. It has now disintegrated with wear and the weather, and holds water like a sponge. Would there be any ill effect from putting this on the grass gallops which we used to dress with peat?" |

| Answer/Response: | "We have analysed the material and it would seem that it might help your grass gallops a little. It is high in organic matter (86% if the dry material), has a pH of 6.4 (i.e. no lime deficiency) and has some small plant food content. There is just a possibility that in rotting down further it could result in a loss of nitrogen from the soil and you might need to apply a little nitrogenous fertilizer also to the grass gallops if there is any unacceptable decrease in grass growth." |
