| Question: | "Our greens contain a high proportion of annual meadow-grass, with a certain amount of bent. Would it be worthwhile to oversow them this autumn and if so what seed would you recommend for the purpose?" |

| Answer/Response: | "Oversowing is not usually very successful and it is better to aim at reducing the annual meadow-grass content of the turf gradually by suitable management. Plenty of spiking, top dressing with suitable material (preferably a good sandy home-made compost) and avoidance of excessive fertilizing and watering will all tend to favour the growth of the deeper-rooted more desirable grasses like the bent, at the expense of the annual meadow-grass. We will enlarge on this advice during the next visit to the Club, due in the autumn." |
