Question:"We enclose several samples taken from the marking lines of our courts. We think there is some disease, which has been noticed along the lines in autumn for the last two years, though not in the spring. Can you tell us why these thin, discoloured areas have developed? These marking lines incidentally are now just slightly higher than the rest of the courts and we think they are beginning to be responsible for some bad bounces."
Answer/Response:"Our biologist reports that he has not found any actual disease pathogen in the turf. He thinks it is just a weakening of the grass caused by a build-up of lime (applied in the marking fluid) through the years and a corresponding deficiency of soil. It really sounds as though the time has come to remove some of this excess lime. This you can do in the autumn by taking out the actual marking lines as far down as you can see the lime and replacing them neatly with narrow strips of new turf of suitable quality trimmed to the required thickness. Although the job is laborious we think, in view of the weakness of the existing turf over the lines which you report, this is the best course of action to take. If it had been simply a question of restoring levels you could have hand hollow tine forked the lines closely, swept off the cores and then rolled, which would have caused the surface to drop."
