Question:"We are receiving a few complaints from our players with regard to the length of grass on our two pitches. We usually leave the grass long deliberately for the start of the rugby season. What are your views?"
Answer/Response:"We are certainly in favour of allowing the grass to grow up to a height of 50 mm to 75 mm (2-3 in.) for the start of the rugby season. After this the wear and tear of rugby matches will generally stop the grass growing any longer. Although the longer growth could conceivably slow down the speed of a player to a slight extent, on the credit side there are several advantages. In the first place it often benefits directly the players themselves since the ground is often still hard in September before the autumn rains come, and the longer grass cushions the impact of the tumbles and falls. Then again, in winter when there is frost the longer grass has a corresponding insulating effect so that cancellations of fixtures are less likely. Looking more from the groundsman's point of view, the longer the grass is left for the start of the season the greater the percentage of it which is likely to survive to the end, and the smaller the scale of end-of-season renovation required."
