Question:"As you know we are troubled by "fairy rings" in some of our show rings and these have caused problems for a number of years. On a recent radio programme it was claimed that fairy rings could be removed by deep forking, applying a mild detergent and treating with calomel dust. I would be interested to know if this has been tried out and if so would you recommend us to try it?"
Answer/Response:"You do not say what type of fairy ring was referred to in the programme. Would they be the ordinary green rings caused by mushrooms or puff-balls we wonder, or would they be the really harmful rings which actually produce bare areas in the turf - the rings in fact which you have in your grounds, and which are caused by the toadstool fungus Marasmius oreades? Whilst the treatment quoted may perhaps inhibit to some extent the mushroom or puff-ball rings, it is not likely to be effective against the Marasmius rings. In fact the only method of getting rid of these is to dig them out completely and replace the infected soil and turf with fresh material, preferably after sterilising the excavation with a solution of formaldehyde. There is no direct method of chemical control of any of the fairy rings which can be guaranteed to give results but we are at present investigating a number of fungicides for their efficacy in this context. The trials are still at an early stage."
