Question:"We have as usual been mowing our greens at 3/16 in. this summer. A number of patches have, however, recently appeared where the grass seems to be shorter - perhaps only 1/16 - 1/8 in. in height. These patches are visible even when greens have been recently cut and are making putting conditions a little bumpy. A sample taken from one of the affected areas is enclosed for your comments."
Answer/Response:"Knowing your course it is our opinion that the damage to your greens has probably been caused by rabbits, which are capable of very close grazing, nibbling the grass down to a level noticeably shorter than your standard cutting height. It is probable that the trouble is an indirect effect of recent dry weather. The greens, being regularly watered, provide lusher feed for the rabbits than other areas where the grass is parched and dry and the problem is, therefore, worse than it would be in a normal season. As to remedial measures, any of the usual methods of rabbit control could prove effective. We would, however, foresee a lessening of the trouble now that wetter weather has returned, as the rabbits will probably turn to alternative sources of feed."
