| Question: | "We enclose a sample of the grubs that have been troubling our greens. These were found in hollow tine holes around which they had eaten the grass down. We would appreciate your identification of the grub and could you suggest control measures?" |

| Answer/Response: | "The grubs have been identified by our Biologist as larvae of the turnip moth (Agrotis segetum). The eggs of this moth are laid in the summer and the grubs feed in the autumn, hibernating during the winter to become active in the following spring. These caterpillars, commonly called cutworms have occasionally caused trouble in Europe before, and a soil insecticide has proved satisfactory. The best time to apply the insecticide is in the autumn but otherwise it would have to be late spring when the grubs are active." |
