Question:"At the end of October we treated a wide band on the perimeter of the outfield with a wormkiller and it appears that as a result of this the moles on adjacent land have not ventured onto our ground. We are now considering treating the remainder of the outfield to eradicate the problem of worm casts which disrupt the surface both for cricket during the summer and for hockey during the winter. Perhaps you could advise us on this matter bearing in mind that we use fertilizer regularly and that the land drains readily."
Answer/Response:"It is quite correct that earthworm control discourages moles as earthworms are their normal food. The beneficial effects of overall earthworm control in producing a clean surface for cricket, hockey, etc. are considered to exceed the desirable attributes of earthworm activity. You are recommended to use a chlordane wormkiller during a spell of mild showery weather when the worms are actively casting. Suitable opportunities normally occur during the spring and autumn. Take care when handling the material as it is highly poisonous and apply it strictly at the maker's recommended rate. As a result of eliminating the earthworms you may find a need to use your spiker a little more frequently but other management should not be affected except beneficially."
