Question:"Our bowling green is surrounded by trees and this provides a damp situation at this time of year, making the green particularly susceptible to fusarium patch disease. We undertake preventive methods every autumn and treat with an organic mercury fungicide at the first signs of disease. Are there any steps we should take (other than removing the trees) to reduce the incidence of disease?"
Answer/Response:"The way to reduce incidence of attack from fusarium is to provide less favourable conditions for its establishment. Such routine maintenance in the autumn as clearing the debris from fallen leaves, etc., by brushing them off the green should be carried out. Switching or brushing the green every morning to disperse the dew is also important. The grass should be kept topped as necessary since longer grass (and therefore moister surface conditions) tends to encourage disease. Attention to all the above will help but you may still have to do something about the trees - why not consult a specialist about judicious pruning?"
