Question:"We were wondering whether the purchase of tractor-drawn spiking equipment for use on our fairways is justified?"
Answer/Response:"Aeration work is very helpful in encouraging root development, maintaining dry surface conditions, and in assisting fibre break-down. On many sports grounds spiking is a very regular (e.g. weekly) operation on winter pitches during the playing season but golf clubs tend to think only of spiking on one or two occasions during the year. This is unfortunate particularly on heavy land courses where fairways tend to be wet in winter. Although golf fairways are not as heavily used as football pitches golfers do require dry surface conditions. The possession of your own spiking machine is essential if the frequent spiking which we believe desirable on your heavy land course is to be performed regularly. Some discretion is clearly necessary the use of the equipment, for example when the course is very wet the tractor wheels may do too much harm to make the job worth while."
