Question:"We are considering the installation of a fully automatic pop-up watering system serving all the greens on our course. Do you think this is a good idea?"
Answer/Response:"There are many advantages to the automatic type of pop-up watering system. Any reliable sprinkler system is not only a great asset in drought conditions when the growth, colour and vigour of swards can thereby be maintained, but also allows fertilizer, etc., to be applied exactly when required without having to depend on unreliable showers for watering-in. The automatic type of system allows watering at night to cut out inconvenience to golfers without the necessity for expensive over-time by the staff and the pop-ups eliminate the need for manhandling of hose and the frequent movement of sprinklers. Another advantage may be greater uniformity of application and hence more efficient use of water resources. All this goes a long way to offsetting the high initial cost of the system proposed. You will, however, have to guard against over-watering since this is often a temptation as a result of enthusiasm for the new system and the job being made so easy."
