Question:"We may shortly be prohibited from using water on the greens. In this case what procedure would you suggest in order to protect the greens as much as possible? Should we restrict their use?"
Answer/Response:"While water is available continue with adequate watering, aiming to keep the top soil moist to at least 150 mm (6 in.). If necessary hand solid tine fork or spike on drier areas to assist penetration of water and use a wetting agent for any particularly difficult places if you have not already done this. If the drought continues and watering is prohibited, keep the height of cut up to 6 mm (4/16 in.) and allow cuttings to fly. In addition carry out occasional top dressing with a finely screened friable compost, aiming to make applications at, say, 10 to 14 day intervals, using 0.25-0.5 kg/m2 (1/2 lb. per sq. yd.). Play on the greens when the grass is under drought stress may cause enhanced wear and moreover delay recovery when normal weather conditions return. More renovation may be required and an increase in less desirable grasses and weeds is possible. Nevertheless, we consider that greens are meant to be played upon so that a decision to restrict play should not be taken lightly. If the drought continues and you have no water the Committee (advised by the Greenkeeper) may have to decide that it is in the club's best interest to preserve the greens."
