Question:"There are several dark green depressions to be found on our green this year. This problem is of considerable concern to our members due to its interference with play. Please would you advise us what to do? A sample of the affected turf is enclosed."
Answer/Response:"The turf sample has been examined in our laboratory and it is affected by a fungus known as a superficial basidiomycete of which there are several types some of which can not even be named in the present state of knowledge. They attack the fibre in the turf, leading sometimes to a depression in surface levels. Although not a common problem, such fungal activity is by no means unknown and this year after the drought there have been quite a few occasions when these symptoms have been found. The only treatment we can suggest is repeat application at intervals of a fungicide of an organic mercury type, but this is not always effective. In many instances these phenomena have disappeared without any chemical control measures and we are inclined to recommend no treatment unless the green is definitely being harmed. Surface levels should be corrected by top dressing with a sandy compost material. Basically the chief problem is the accumulation of fibre which should be controlled."
