Question: | "We have experienced very poor growth this spring and the greens are still looking very pale. Should we bring forward the spring fertilizer dressing a few weeks in order to promote better growth?" |
Answer/Response: | "The poor rate of growth this spring is no doubt largely the result of cold weather and even if the spring fertilizer dressing was applied early the expected benefit from this might still be suppressed by the weather conditions. It is usually found that a light top dressing of screened sandy compost at this stage is effective in promoting improved growth as well as removing any minor irregularities in the surface that have resulted from winter play. A rate of application of about 1.0 kg/m2 (2 lb./sq. yd.) would be appropriate and adequate working in should be done with a drag mat or brush. The spring fertilizer dressing should be applied about the end of this month according to local conditions. The course may well take a little longer to recover from winter play this year as no doubt there was still as much play as usual despite the very wet weather this winter." |
