Question: | "Every year knotweed is a problem on the football pitch as it seems to strangle grass growth during the summer and then dies out itself early in the playing season. Is there a selective herbicide that is effective against this weed?" |
Answer/Response: | "Knotweed is a fairly difficult weed to control but good results have been obtained with careful timing of the following programme. In the spring prior to renovation work if knotweed seedlings appear, a selective weedkiller containing 2,4-D alone may be applied. The over-sowing work may then safely proceed as normal shortly after spraying. The knotweed seedlings may not, however, appear sufficiently early for this preliminary spraying to be done before renovation which obviously has to be done immediately the season ends. When the seedling sward has reached the two leaf stage, a product containing only ioxynil may be used for control of the young knotweed plants, if considered necessary. Later in the summer once the sward is really well established, more powerful herbicides may be used such as those based on dicamba. Such treatment may be repeated after an interval of about one month if any weeds are left and provided growth is good." |
