Question:"This spring we have been puzzled by the appearance of almost black patches on the surface (sample enclosed) at several points on the green. Is this dangerous and is there any method of control?"
Answer/Response:"On examination the cause of the dark patches proves to be a species of blue/green algae which is growing on top of the turf sample. The condition is fairly common, the algal growth developing usually on areas where the grass is relatively sparse. As a rule the algal growth is a sign that the surface is slow to drain due to over-compaction, too heavy a soil or some other cause. The algae does not harm the turf in any way but it is unsightly and can be something of a nuisance if the green is in play. Control can usually be achieved fairly easily by local watering on of sulphate of iron in solution - 17 g in 5 litres of water/2 m2 (1/2 oz. in 1 gal. water/2 sq. yd.). The algae will return, however, in wet weather unless the surface drainage is improved. Plenty of spiking and dressings of very sandy compost are the obvious remedies, and sometimes it is useful to include a quantity of wood charcoal in the top dressing - up to 0.5 kg/m2 (1 lb./sq. yd.) of 3 mm (1/8 in.) mesh."
