Question:"Our fairways are very weak in places and indeed they do not seem to have recovered since the very dry summer of 1976. Is there anything we can do to improve the situation?"
Answer/Response:"I recall from my visit earlier this year that the turf on the fairways is rather fibrous and this material restricts the penetration of rainfall into the soil and so grass growth is also restricted. As discussed in the report, more aeration and scarification work is required during the spring and autumn together with the fertilizer treatment suggested in the report. An application of a mainly nitrogenous granular fertilizer might be warranted at this stage. The soil samples examined last year show that there is no lime requirement and full recovery should be achieved through aeration and chain harrowing this autumn. The various types of tine which remove cores of soil are particularly helpful in this aeration work. We would suggest that several passes be made with such a spiker on all of the fairways at times when soil conditions will allow good penetration, followed by the chain harrowing. Some oversowing might be done on the very weakest areas as more moist conditions return in early September."
