| Question: | "As you know, we water our racecourse with the aid of sprinklers mounted on lengths of light piping which we move along the course behind a tractor. During the recent hot weather a series of brown lines has developed, associated presumably with these portable water pipes. I enclose some sample turves." |

| Answer/Response: | "We have examined the turves and in our opinion the discoloration of the turf was caused by the bruising of the grass by the dragging of the pipes over it whilst it was in a semiwilting condition due to the dryness of the soil and the high air temperatures. Provided that you can water sufficiently we think that there will be no permanent harm, and the brown lines will disappear in due course. A dressing of complete fertilizer would doubtless be helpful." |
