Question: | "We appear to have an attack of red thread disease on the fairways and semi-rough and wonder what action we should take. Should we apply a fungicide to prevent this spreading to the greens? This would be a rather expensive operation. We enclose a sample of affected turf." |
Answer/Response: | "We can confirm that the sample is affected by red thread, corticium disease. The disease is disfiguring rather than damaging and we would consider that the cost of fungicide treatment on the fairways and semi-rough unlikely to be justified. If the attack is severe then treatment with a nitrogenous fertilizer could be considered such as a granular fertilizer with a high level of nitrogen. The improvement in growth will help the grass to outgrow the disease. Greens are usually well fertilized and are, therefore, less likely to be affected. If the disease does affect the greens a dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer such as one of the summer mixtures suggested in our report should be applied. Fungicide treatment of the greens could be necessary if an attack were to be persistent." |
