Question:"After renovating bare and thin areas on our soccer pitch we have experienced a serious weed problem amongst the young seedling grass. Although we do not have knotweed we have many weeds including daisies, dandelions and plantains. Could you please advise on suitable weedkillers?"
Answer/Response:"If, as you suggest, so many weeds exist it would be desirable, if time allows, to do some hand weeding to reduce their density and allow the young grass to come away more strongly. We would expect any annual weeds which may be present to disappear quickly once regular mowing commences. However, it may be prudent to spray with weedkiller but at this stage you are limited in your choice of products. We presume that you have renovated with perennial ryegrass only in which case when the seedlings have two to three expanded leaves and growing strongly you can either use ioxynil alone, with no admixture with other chemicals, at 1.1 kg a.i./ha (16 oz. a.i./acre) or you could use low strength rates of 2,4-D amine at 0.84 kg a.i./ha (12 oz. a.i./acre), 2,4-D ester at 0.49 kg a.i./ha (7 oz. a.i./acre) or mecoprop at 1.4 kg a.i./ha (24 oz. a.i./acre) at least six weeks after sowing. Once the sward has developed fully a broad spectrum weedkiller (one containing 2,4-D and mecoprop) could then be used at the normal recommended rate on the container of the chosen product. Of course, carefully follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Our suggestions relate only to perennial ryegrass or similar strong-growing grasses. We should have to make more cautious recommendations for fescue/bent turf."
