| Question: | "We have been concerned, as you know, for some time now about the difference in the going on the final straight on the Flat and have decided to do something about it. What would you advise?" |

| Answer/Response: | "Yes, we remember that the going tends to be firmer on the outer half of the track than the inner half. You could reduce the discrepancy by increasing the intensity of spiking on the outer half and top dressing from time to time with peat. The peat should be fibrous but not too lumpy. It should be applied soon after a thorough spiking and then harrowed in. If you wished at the same time to firm up a little the going of the inner half you could do this by repeat top dressings of suitable lime-free sand." |
