Question:"Although we introduced a complete new tile drainage system two years ago the pitch still does not drain as well as we would like. We are thinking of trying sand-slitting but would value your opinion before going any further."
Answer/Response:"The cutting of slits 50 mm (2 in.) wide across a football pitch and to an appropriate depth, filled with gravel first and then sand, has proved of undoubted value in improving drainage. The slits should be cut at fairly close intervals, preferably across the main fall, though this is not vital. What is vital is that these slits should intercept the aggregate backfilling above the tile drains so that water can run freely from the surface of the pitch down through the slits into the aggregate above the tile drains and away out to the main outfalls. There is really no point in going into detail in a letter. If we are to be of real help to you it would be necessary for us to visit the pitch and examine the soil and the drainage system. Only when this has been done could we tell you whether slit drainage in your case would be worthwhile and, if appropriate, work out for you a suitable scheme in detail to be implemented at the end of the football season."
