Question:"We have been carrying out hollow tine aeration as advised for the bowling green and the machine has disturbed the surface badly - lifting the turf in places. We have therefore suspended the work and wish to know if there is a less severe treatment that can be done."
Answer/Response:"The difficulty you describe seems to be related to the root break mentioned in our report and there is obviously a great need for really intensive aeration treatment as the roots are not even able to anchor the turf properly. We would therefore advise that the treatment be continued. However, it may be worth completing the operation by hand to avoid excessive surface disruption. Also in this way it will be possible to achieve slightly deeper tine penetration. Where the surface is badly disturbed it should be carefully restored by hand work. Adequate top dressing with screened sandy compost should then be done in due course and the material thoroughly worked into the base of the sward. Further aeration with slit or solid tines would then be desirable throughout the winter whenever conditions are suitable. The direction of treatment should be varied as far as possible."
