Question:"As part of our general policy of enlarging tee space we are planning to scrap the two small tees on the 2nd hole and replace them with one large tee. We have a good idea of how we should set about the work but are there any points which are especially relevant, do you think?"
Answer/Response:"There are two main errors which are constantly seen in golf tee construction. One common mistake, especially when heavy earth-moving equipment is used, is that of overcompacting the soil so that the new tee never drains really well, especially in winter. When the new tee has been built and the topsoil is in position you should subsoil cultivate with suitable equipment capable of working efficiently to a good depth to ensure against excessive compaction down below. Another very common fault in new tees is a bumpy surface - and bumpy tees are no good to anyone. Great care should be taken with the turf bed preparation and the laying of the turf if a permanently true surface is to be achieved. A good firm (though not overcompacted) fine turf bed should be produced, preferably by alternate heeling and raking, and the turf should be cut to an even thickness before it is laid."
