Question:"On my lawn I am troubled with fungal growths in association with dark green rings of grass. I enclose a sample from an affected region and will be pleased if you could suggest an effective control."
Answer/Response:"Your lawn is affected by a mild type of fairy ring the causal fungus of which has been identified as a species of Lycoperdon. This type of ring (classed as grade 2) produces fruiting bodies which are commonly called 'puff-balls'. Usually these fairy rings are not very harmful and tend to be noticed mainly where low fertility exists; therefore an application of nitrogenous fertilizer should help to improve the colour of the grass over the whole lawn so that the rings blend in more. No fungicide has yet been found which will guarantee successful control. If the fruiting bodies are sufficiently troublesome it might be worth trying to suppress them by the following treatment with which some success has been obtained in the past. Apply to each 40m2, 35 g of an organic mercury fungicide in 30 litres of water, to which has been added 150 ml of wetting agent (to each 40 sq. yd., 1 oz. of fungicide in 6 gal. of water, to which has been added 5 fl. oz. of wetting agent)."
