Question:"Our course has been under a variable depth of snow for quite a few weeks now and we are getting rather concerned that it may be causing damage to the turf. Would you advise us to remove the snow, at any rate from the greens, or to leave it to clear naturally?"
Answer/Response:"Whilst there is a snow cover on the course we would advise you to leave it. By clearing the snow you will almost certainly damage the turf and leave it exposed to frost. The snow in fact acts as a protective blanket over the turf. When the snow does thaw there may well be disease such as fusarium patch which has developed beneath the snow. If so, take prompt action with a suitable fungicide. If, after the snow has cleared, the greens do become frozen, keep the golfers on temporary winter greens until the main greens have thawed out completely. Considerable damage can be caused by playing on main greens when they are frozen or - worse still - thawing out at the top over a still frozen sub-surface."
