Question:"In your reports you frequently mention the use of a good quality compost on our various bowling greens around the town. Do you think it would be practicable for us to make real compost from our own materials? We might be able to use labour from a job creation scheme."
Answer/Response:"Usually it is impractical to use proper compost for bowling greens but in your circumstances it might be possible to organise and provide a central compost factory. If you could do this then it would certainly show results. Compost heaps are normally built from alternative layers of soil and suitable organic material, heaps being allowed to stand for a year before being broken down for the compost to be shredded or screened. You will know what materials (soil, dressed sewage, odd waste material, grass cuttings, etc.) you are likely to have available and perhaps it would be worth your while coming here to discuss the possibilities fully. Cost of equipment, sheds and transport may prove a limiting factor."
