Question:"This season we have lost a whole series of fixtures due to frost and snow on the pitch and would like you to describe any measures which might be taken to keep the pitch playable in hard weather. We do not want to spend too much money."
Answer/Response:"Electric under-soil warming systems have proved their worth, but are of course not cheap to install and maintain. Schemes involving pipes which conduct warm air or water below the surface appear to be quite viable, and one club has made successful use of an air tent. We can give you more information about these schemes if you so wish. All cost money! A relatively cheap method of ensuring playability is to spread 20 tonnes of straw on a yet unfrozen pitch, though getting the straw off again for the match, especially if there has been snow on the straw, needs time and labour. It is surprising how a good natural cover of thick grass alone, if you can keep it, will insulate the soil against frost. Whatever you do, keep salt or other "de-icing" chemicals off the pitch or you will lose your grass and possibly impair your soil drainage for quite some time to come!"
