Question:"Two years ago we had our 17th green re-shaped and re-constructed and since that time we have been unable to play on this green when the weather has been really wet. Our Head Greenkeeper has checked the drain outlets and found them to be bone dry even after a week's heavy rain. We have tried repeatedly spiking the green but this does not seem to help at all. We would appreciate your advice on what to do next."
Answer/Response:"We would suspect that the cause of the problem is some deep seated compaction in the topsoil and/or subsoil which is below the level at which the tines you have been using are effective. Unfortunately, we frequently encounter this problem which is usually the result of heavy machinery crossing the area during re-construction work (especially under wet conditions), followed by inadequate cultivation work to alleviate the condition in both topsoil and subsoil. It may prove necessary to lift the turf to put matters right. However, there may be several factors involved and we would suggest that you request an advisory visit before proceeding. This will enable us to have a first-hand view of conditions so as to assess what can be done and to check the need for further amelioration of the topsoil with sand if reconstruction is in fact necessary."
