Question:"Small areas of moss are now appearing in my lawn and I would like to get rid of them. I have enclosed a sample turf and I would appreciate your advice."
Answer/Response:"Moss invasion of turf can arise from a variety of causes and judging by the appearance of the sample turf you enclose the moss in your lawn is likely to have been caused by over-close mowing. Lawns do not really need to be mown closely if they are purely ornamental in character, and mowing at a height of about 13 mm (1/2 in.) should be quite satisfactory in most cases throughout the mowing season (including occasional topping through the winter). Your height of cut having been raised, the next step should be to use a mosskiller where necessary. There are a number of proprietary mosskillers on the market based on some form of nitrogen, sulphate of iron and calomel suitable for use at this time of year. Apply the mosskiller over the moss-infected parts of the lawn as evenly as you can on a fine day. When the moss has been killed you can lightly tease out the remains with a spring wire rake."
