Question:"We would appreciate your opinion on the use of "hover type" mowers for cutting the lawns around our factory and offices. These machines seem to be becoming very popular and our gardener is of the opinion that one would be particularly useful, especially as there are some awkward spots which are difficult to reach and cut effectively with a conventional mower."
Answer/Response:"As we have seen in the past, some of your lawns do present some problems to conventional cylinder mowers, which could be overcome to some extent by using one of the modern rotary mowers which float on a cushion of air. Such machines cope well with undulating surfaces and banks, and are particularly useful for mowing under low-growing shrubs where access with a conventional mower is often not possible. There are a number of points which you must bear in mind, however. These machines will not give the fineness and closeness of cut possible with a cylinder mower. A mower of this type would therefore not be suitable for any area where a really fine finish is required. Also, there is usually no facility for grass collection and cuttings are in consequence dispersed - possible problems from disease, earthworms, weeds and coarse grasses could be envisaged. In addition, the surfaces will probably take on a rather softer nature. On a safety note, we would point out that some people have lost toes using this type of machine and it is desirable to wear steel toe-capped boots when operating."
