Question:"We have recently purchased a small powered scarifier. Our greenkeeper is rather enthusiastic about using the machine since our green tends to play a little slow but, before commencing the work, we would like your advice as to what depth the blades should be set."
Answer/Response:"There is really no set answer to this question and we can only give a general guide to the use of this type of machine in that much depends on the condition of the green and indeed the prevailing weather. We recall that the green is very fibrous below the turf surface and no doubt scarification will help speed up the green but one should not try to do too much at once because the surface could be badly damaged. Scarification work should be done only lightly throughout the spring and summer and work at depth be restricted to the early autumn period, this latter work being done once the bowling season ends but before the growth ceases. During the spring and summer light scarification may be done at regular intervals, e.g. weekly during good growing weather but not when conditions are hot and dry. At this time the work should be fairly superficial and the blades set lightly so as to bring up procumbent growth and trash without causing undue surface damage. When a thorough job is to be done in the early autumn there must be plenty of moisture in the topsoil and growth taking place to facilitate recovery from the punishment the grasses inevitably receive. At this time the blades should be set to the maximum depth that can be achieved without causing unacceptable damage. More than one pass may be required but this very much depends on the strength of the turf at that time. Therefore the severity of the work must be dependent on the greenkeeper's discretion."
