Question:"A large number of dark green almost black globules have recently appeared on several of our grass tennis courts (see samples). Could you tell us what is responsible for this condition, whether it is harmful and what control measures, if any, are necessary?"
Answer/Response:"The condition is the result of rapid growth of a blue-green algal species named Nostoc. Recent wet weather will have encouraged its growth as algae are only able to survive in permanently moist conditions. It should therefore be obvious that methods aimed at improving surface drainage will help ensure that the condition does not recur. We would suggest the deep hand forking of affected areas using a solid tine fork if possible supplemented by general machine slit tine spiking of the entire court area. The drainage system should be checked to ensure that it is functioning efficiently. Direct chemical control of algae is not often necessary but if considered worth while treatment could be carried out using copper sulphate at a rate of 1 oz. of the blue crystals in 25 gal. water to 100 sq. yd. or sulphate of iron at 1 oz. in 2 gal. water to 5 sq. yd. It should be remembered that copper sulphate is toxic to grass at higher rates of application and the above rate should therefore be strictly adhered to."
