Question:"The usual practice at our club is to apply the spring fertilizer dressing in mid-April. This year however the weather has been extremely poor so far and very little growth has taken place. Would it be wise to apply the spring dressing now, at the usual time, despite the lack of suitable growing weather or wait until later in the season in the hope that conditions will have improved by that time."
Answer/Response:"It should be appreciated that no amount of fertilizer will produce growth if the temperature is below the minimum required for grass growth to take place. Fertilizer dressings during the present cold weather would therefore probably be wasted, much of the application being lost by rain leeching before suitable growing weather appears. Even if a short period of mild weather is experienced and growth is obtained, there is always a danger of conditions deteriorating, in which case the new and relatively soft growth will be very prone to growth check and possible damage. In view of this we would advise that your spring fertilizer dressing be delayed until there is a strong possibility of a prolonged improvement in the general state of the weather. Unfortunately reasonable growing weather is a necessity for the production of good swards and cannot be entirely circumvented."
