Question:"A number of our greens have recently developed small orange-brown patches, a condition which our Greenkeeper thinks is fusarium patch disease. We are enclosing a sample from an affected area, taken with a golf hole cutter, and would be grateful if you could confirm the diagnosis and suggest control measures. The course has not been seriously affected by this condition in the past and maintenance has been according to your recommendations so we are wondering if you could tell us why the disease has appeared at present."
Answer/Response:"Your sample has been examined by our biologist and fusarium found to be present. Control can be achieved using a mercurial or PCNB fungicide at the manufacturers' recommended curative rate, this treatment being carried out as soon as possible. Cases of fusarium patch disease have been very common this year, due to weather conditions being highly suitable for the development of the disease organism during the September-October period. Mild, damp weather is always conducive to fusarium development and in future autumn or spring periods it might be wise to give a preventative fungicide application if this type of weather appears likely to establish itself over an extended period."
