Question:"Our course is a seaside links in an exposed situation and is, of course, on sandy soil. Could you recommend trees suitable for planting in small clumps or coppices under such conditions?"
Answer/Response:"It is not easy to establish trees on exposed coastal areas and the hardwood species, e.g. oak and beech, are more difficult than the softwood conifers; it is doubtful whether it is worth while spending money on the former. Of the conifers, Corsican Pine (Pinus laricio), Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Austrian Pine (Pinus austriaca) should be suitable. Planting in groups rather than singly will help establishment and be more pleasing aesthetically. As an alternative to the above, and providing that a plant which will form scrub growth to a height of 10-15 ft. will serve your purpose, Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) would be suitable. Close planting, at about 6 ft. intervals, and allowing the plants to develop without pruning will result in a dense mass. No difficulty should be encountered in establishing this species under your particular conditions."
