Question:"It has been suggested that we establish a turf nursery in order to ensure a supply of turf for renovating our tennis courts and cricket table. Would you agree that such a nursery would be useful and, if so, how should it be established?"
Answer/Response:"Turf nurseries are extremely useful for use during renovation, particularly since suitable turf is very difficult to obtain from outside sources and, when obtainable, rather expensive. It should be remembered, however, that a nursery must be given regular maintenance after establishment - too many clubs lay down a nursery and then neglect the area, allowing the sward to become coarse and weedy. After seed bed preparation, and, if necessary, a fertilizer application, a nursery to provide turf suitable for the areas mentioned above should be sown on a heavy clay-loam top soil using a bent-fescue seeds mixture such as 8 parts Highlight Chewings fescue 2 parts Highland Browntop bent at about 1 oz. per sq. yd. It may take two to three years to establish a turf suitable for use on your playing areas and the nursery should, therefore, be three times the area of turf required each year. The third of the nursery used each year can then be re-seeded after the turf has been lifted, so ensuring a continuous supply of turf for the future."
