| Question: | "A large number of dark brown toadstools have suddenly appeared on my lawn. I enclose a sample of the fungus concerned in the hope that you can advise on whether it will have any harmful effects on my lawn and if control measures are necessary." |

| Answer/Response: | "The toadstools are a species of Inocybe and occur very commonly in turf during the autumn period. The organism is a saprophyte living on decaying organic matter beneath the turf surface and as such will cause no damage to the lawn grasses. The toadstools are however somewhat unsightly and if considered worth while their appearance can be prevented by the application of a mercurial fungicide. Failing this it is wise to knock over the toadstools to minimise spore production and to lessen the chance of a severe infestation next year." |
