| Question: | "Several years ago we established a pitch on a tip site and since then not only have surface levels gradually deteriorated but wet muddy conditions have developed over a large area of the pitch. It has been suggested that we should introduce a comprehensive drainage scheme into this pitch and we would appreciate any advice you can give us." |

| Answer/Response: | "Tipped sites (especially where there has been uncontrolled tipping) often finish up in the condition you describe. A number of problems arise when such a site requires drainage, a principal one being the risk of further settlement which would put at least parts of any drainage scheme introduced out of action. Other remedial measures such as sub-soil cultivation may not be practicable because of the danger of bringing tipped material to the surface. Because of the considerable number of imponderables appertaining to this type of site we suggest that in order that we might assist you more fully you should commission us to inspect the site and discuss with you what ought to be done." |
