| Question: | "Our outfield is mown with a large 36 in. motor mower. Recently we have noticed that on some areas the machine is not cutting evenly but is producing parallel ripples in the sward about 3 or 4 in. wide. The mower has been serviced recently and appears in good working order so we would be interested to learn what is causing the above effect." |

| Answer/Response: | "Your outfield appears to be affected by the condition usually known as 'washboarding', where the machine produces ridges at right angles to the line of cut. The cause of the condition is obscure but it is generally thought that under certain circumstances some kind of rhythm is set up in the machine which leads to the ridge and furrow effect. Washboarding almost invariably occurs where mowing is carried out in the same direction on each occasion and we therefore suggest that in future you vary the direction of mowing, cutting occasionally diagonally across and along the ridges. Rolling of the affected areas would also be advisable." |
