| Question: | "We enclose a sample of weed which we have had on parts of our soccer pitch for two or three years. Can you tell us what the weed is and how to control it?" |

| Answer/Response: | "The weed has been identified as knotgrass or knotweed - Polygonum aviculare - which often establishes in muddy areas, e.g. goal mouths etc. It is difficult to control and spraying is best carried out before the plant reaches the two leaf stage of development. It is likely that in your area the weed will have developed to that stage before renovation is carried out. We, therefore, suggest that a 2,4-D type of weedkiller is applied at a rate stated on the container two weeks before renovation is carried out. In addition, and providing grass germination and growth are satisfactory, an Ioxynil type of weedkiller should be applied 3-4 weeks after germination of the grass seed. We would stress, however, that Ioxynil is the only type of weedkiller that should be applied to such young grass. Later on in the season you could treat with the 2,4-D/CMPP type of weedkiller you have previously used if desired." |
