Question:"We are going to construct two new golf greens and wonder whether the sward should be established by turfing, (could we use sea-marsh turf), or seeding."
Answer/Response:"The advantage of turfing is that you can play on the green quite soon afterwards, e.g. if you turf a new green in the autumn you can start to play on it all being well in the following spring. It is however difficult to obtain suitable turf these days. You may, of course, have a turf nursery or, alternatively, you may be lucky to have suitable turf on the course, especially if you prepare in advance. It is almost impossible to buy good turf in the normal way. Sea-marsh turf, sometimes used for bowling greens, is not considered very suitable for golf greens and we advise you not to use it. If you have time to wait seeding is probably best. You can get good reliable seed and you can, if care is taken, make a really first-class job. However, it may be eighteen months before you can reasonably play on a new golf green established from seed."
