Question: | "We have a small cricket table on which upwards of 45 matches are played during the season. Despite carrying out repair work along the lines recommended by you as well as trying seeding up, the sward has thinned out rapidly and it becomes increasingly difficult for us to prepare true wickets. I await your comments with interest." |
Answer/Response: | "First priority must be given to increasing the size of the table. Extensions at the sides should be treated as the main area with extra top dressing to improve levels and scarifying to remove fibre. Until more usable area is available, turfing the worn wicket ends is the only practicable method of renovation during the playing season. Bare parts should be prepared to take a 3 in. thick turf, laid to maintain general levels with heavyish screened soil rubbed into the joints. Keep well watered to prevent drying and shrinkage. At the end of the season thinner areas should be pricked over and sown before the middle of September, leaving completely bare parts for re-turfing in October. Ensure that the table receives adequate feeding and watering in summer, and is thoroughly aerated and top dressed in the autumn." |
