Question:"During recent wet weather small patches of very dark green or black slime appeared on the surface of the soil over some areas of my lawn. I believe that this is an algal growth-can you tell me the best method of control?"
Answer/Response:"Algae do not harm the grass in the way that a disease does, but they can be unsightly and may make the surface slippery and hence somewhat dangerous. They require moisture for growth and therefore tend to occur only on wet situations or when prolonged wet weather has prevailed. Any measures which can be taken to dry up the surface are useful, i.e. spiking or hand forking followed by liberal applications of sandy top dressing aimed at maintaining free surface drainage. In the short term chemical treatment can be undertaken, the traditional material being sulphate of iron at a rate of 50g in 8 litres water to 4m2 (1 ½ oz. in 1 ½ gallons water to 4 sq. yd.). Dichlorophen mosskillers, available commercially, are also effective and should be applied at 85ml to 10m2 (2 fl. oz. to 12 sq. yd.). A third treatment has been introduced over the last twelve months, this being known as Bray's Emulsion, this being based on cresylic acid. It is applied as a spray at 30ml in 10 litres water to 8.5m2 (1 fl. oz. in 2 gallons water to 10 sq. yd.)."
