Question:"Vandals have scattered sodium chloride on two areas of our main cricket table. The salt could have only been down two hours and although I swept it off about twelve square yards of turf are completely burnt and the grass is dead. What shall I do to the areas?"
Answer/Response:"If you are sure that it was sodium chloride (common salt) which has gone on then we make the following suggestions:- a. The easiest and simplest way is to cut out the damaged areas and replace with fresh turf immediately, during open weather. b. If sufficient turf is not available then so long as no frost is in the ground lightly prick over the areas with a solid tine fork prior to applying plenty of water in order to leach out the salt into the drainage system. Thoroughly "wash" the areas two or three times. Provided the grass roots have not been too severely damaged some re-growth will occur in spring. This can be assisted to thicken up by over-seeding. During April prick over bare and thinner parts and then work in a soil/seeds mixture using the following seeds mixture at the rate of 1 oz. per sq. yd. 8 parts Chewings fescue var. Highlight 2 parts Browntop bent var. Highland."
