Question:"Could you tell whether it is essential to switch greens every morning? This has been the practice at our Club for a number of years but labour is at a premium at present and some members of our Green Committee consider the switching to be excessively time consuming."
Answer/Response:"We would consider switching a highly desirable operation: firstly to scatter worm casts and other debris so producing better playing surfaces directly and also indirectly by facilitating good mowing; secondly switching will speed the drying of the surface by dispersing dew from the immediate surface so again producing better putting conditions and lessening the incidence of fusarium patch disease which thrives best under damp conditions. This latter point is particularly important in your case as the course has been prone to fusarium in the past. We would therefore consider regular switching a most important operation well worth the time and labour involved. Daily switching could occasionally be dispensed with where labour is short but it should certainly not be abolished!"
