Question:"We had four rugby pitches constructed five years ago. Enclosed is a schedule and drainage plan showing what was done. The pitches are on a very heavy clay sub-soil, and even in a normal winter they soon become unplayable, because of wetness. Can you help?"
Answer/Response:"Having looked at the plan we consider the drainage system to have been well designed, and it should, under your existing ground conditions, be satisfactory, providing it was properly laid. However, in the schedule, although the top soil has been well ameliorated with sand, and should therefore be free draining, we note that no allowance has been made for subsoiling. This is required to relieve the compaction in the sub-soil and so allow for freer passage of water from the top soil to the drains. It is considered by us to be essential particularly where, as in your case, major grading was necessary. Providing the drainage system has been laid at the depths indicated (2 ft. 6 in. to invert) on the drawing it might well be practicable to sub-soil cultivate the pitches carefully at the end of the season. However, unpayable pitches being a problem which we are often asked to solve, we have found each ground to have its own peculiarities and so we would like to see the four pitches for ourselves before giving direct recommendations as to how the problem can be overcome in the best possible way."
