Question:"Daisies are a perennial problem on our fairways. We find that spraying at least once a year is necessary and we are wondering if there is any more permanent method of control. On the other hand if annual spraying is necessary could you please tell us which are the most effective weedkillers."
Answer/Response:"Daisies can be encouraged by the type of management implemented on the fairways and this aspect should therefore be considered before undertaking selective weedkiller treatment. It is known from previous advisory visits that your fairways are excessively alkaline and since daisies thrive best in conditions of high pH one approach to their control would be application of sulphur on the fairways concerned. This is however an extremely drastic treatment and could have deleterious effects on grass growth. It should therefore only be applied after very careful examination of soil conditions etc., and after small scale trials using various rates of sulphur have been carried out on a selected area of fairway. In any event we find it rather surprising that annual spraying has been necessary in the past to keep the daisy population within reasonable limits; it may that you have been unlucky with weather conditions at the time of spraying. Daisies are fairly resistant to the action of selective weedkillers but two applications in a season of a 2,4-D weedkiller carried out during good growing weather when there is a likelihood of several days fine weather following each treatment should markedly reduce the amount of weed present. There should then be no necessity for repeat spraying during the next year or two."
